Terror attacks delay Goa’s chartered flight season
Panaji (PTI): Terror attacks in Ahmedabad and Delhi have affected Goa’s tourism industry with its chartered flight season postponed by another week, experts feel.
The first chartered flight, Minar which was supposed to land at Dabolim airport in Goa from Moscow on September 27 has cancelled its trip holding up the season to next month.
‘‘That was the only chartered flight expected in this month. Rest will start coming from October,’’ TTAG President Ralf D’Souza said.
‘‘Even in October there are 14 landings expected but many of them are not confirmed,’’ he added.
However, the State tourism department feigned innocence on the delay. ‘‘We expect the first chartered flight to arrive in September end. We have no information about any cancellation,’’ Tourism Director Elvis Gomes said.
Goa, famous for its pristine coast, attracts around four lakh foreign tourists annually of which majority arrive through chartered flights.
Official figures confirm that last year 710 chartered flights from across the globe, mostly from European Countries, landed in Goa.
But for this coastal tourist state, which attracts international travellers, the oncoming season has come with a warning.
D’Souza, who heads the apex association of tour operators and hoteliers in the state, concedes that there will be 10 to 15 per cent shortfall in the chartered arrivals for the coming season beginning from October.
He said that out of 800 slots booked at Dabolim airport this season, 500-odd are confirmed.
